The bothies of Scotland are shelters kept unlocked and free by volunteers, open to anyone the mountains catch out, and every one keeps a book: a battered notebook where those who pass through write their names, their routes, the weather, and, because a bothy at night loosens tongues, a great deal more. The trust that looks after the bothy at Allt Dubh has sixty years of these books, and Freya Sinclair, thirty five, an archivist who took the digitising job to be near the hills after a hard year, is transcribing them page by page in the trust's back room when the autumn 1985 book contradicts itself.
