The Lim orchard is the kind of place the whole family means to visit more often and does not, until durian season, when the old pull becomes irresistible and they all come home, the ones from Kuala Lumpur and the ones from Singapore and the ones from further still, to the kampung in the hills, to sleep in the old house and sit up half the night under the trees waiting, in the dark, for the heavy thump of a fruit letting go, because you do not pick a durian, you wait for it, and the waiting, the sitting up together in the warm dark listening for the fall, is as much the season as the eating.
