Every Door Is the Same Door is a tense, humane, idea driven novel about the most personal form of travel there is. Owen Mercer is forty one, a materials technician in a testing laboratory in an invented American city, competent and unremarkable, married to Dr Hanna Mercer, a neurologist, with a nine year old daughter. In the spring of his forty first year he begins waking up, perhaps once a month, in a life that is almost his: the same house with a different kitchen, the same job with a different manager, the same wife with different hair and the same laugh. He assumes, for four months, that he is ill, and Hanna, who is a neurologist and has run every test that exists, tells him he is not.
