Around 1190 BC the king of Ugarit, a rich port on the coast of Syria, sat down to answer a worried letter from the king of Cyprus. His reply survives on a clay tablet. Enemy ships had come, he wrote. His towns had been burned. His army was far away in the land of the Hittites and his fleet was away along the coast of Anatolia, so his country had been left to fend for itself. Seven enemy ships had done great damage. Within a few years Ugarit was a ruin, and it was never lived in again.
