About this book

What would you do with a day when there was nothing you had to do? For ten thousand years that has been a daydream. Now it is an engineering project. Tractors already plough Iowa fields with nobody in the cab. Cows choose their own milking time while robot arms do the rest. Lasers kill weeds one at a time. In Japan, robots build other robots in factories that run for weeks in the dark. Driverless trucks haul freight across Texas, drones fly blood to clinics in Rwanda, and software now writes a large share of the world's new code. Do NOTHING is a plain guide to the automated future, from the field to the kitchen to the walls of your home. Arun Devaraj, who explains clever machines in plain words, follows one invented family, the Ibarras of Iowa, through one imagined Saturday in 2045, the day they call Do Nothing Day. Nana Rosa watches her harvest from the porch. Hana folds dumplings while a robot makes the soup. Theo designs a motorbike part that looks like a bird's bone, and is furious when the house repairs its own leaking pipe before he can. And Lily, eleven, keeps asking the question this book answers: how does it know? Behind every quiet moment of their day, the book steps back into the present and shows the real machines, the real research and the real numbers making that moment possible: how a tractor drives itself, how a robot tells a ripe apple from a leaf, how a language model learns to talk, how a computer designs parts no engineer would draw, and how a house can notice a leak before you do. Every fact is drawn from dated public sources, and every guess is labelled as one. It is honest about failure, too: the pizza robots that went bust, the laundry folding machine whose maker went bankrupt, the carmaker that found it had too many robots, and the software update that stopped millions of computers at once. And it takes on the biggest questions of all. Who will own the machines? If robots grow the food, make the things and fix the house, does money still matter? And when nothing is required of us, what will we choose to do? Warm, clear and surprisingly hopeful, Do NOTHING is for anyone who has wondered what all these machines are really for, and what the rest of us will do once they have done the chores.

Chapter One

The Oldest Dream

2045, AN IMAGINED SATURDAY MORNING, IOWA

Lily Ibarra wakes up at a quarter past seven because the house smells of bread.

She pads downstairs in her socks. The kitchen is warm. A loaf is cooling on a rack by the window, and Moss, the household robot, is standing at the counter folding yesterday's laundry into neat little squares, its padded grey hands moving with the patience of something that has never once been in a hurry. The dishwasher finished in the night. The floor has been swept. On the wall, a small screen says that the house battery is full and that yesterday's spare sunshine was sold back to the town.

Lily climbs onto a stool and pulls the end crust off the loaf, which is the best part and technically not allowed.

Her father comes down a few minutes later, yawning, his hair standing up on one side. He pours a coffee that has already been made and sits beside her.

"Dad," she says, chewing. "What did people do on Saturdays, before?"

Marcus thinks about it. He thinks about his own father, who spent every Saturday of Marcus's childhood mowing, fixing, scrubbing and driving to the hardware store.

"Chores," he says.

"All day?"

"Most of it."

Lily looks at Moss, who is matching socks, and then at the bread, and then out of the window at the robot mower sitting on its pad in the dewy grass. "That sounds terrible," she says.
