A reader asks whether it is too early to start
A reader asks how to know when she is ready to start, and the honest answer is that readiness is the wrong thing to measure.
A reader wrote in with a question I get in some form almost every week, so I am going to answer it here where more people can argue with me about it. She asked: how do I know if I am ready to start, or whether I should wait until I know more, save more, and have a proper plan.
Here is the honest answer, and then the useful one.
The honest answer is that you will never feel ready, and the feeling of readiness you are waiting for does not arrive before you start. It arrives, if at all, about eighteen months in, and it arrives disguised as exhaustion. Everyone I have ever spoken to who built something from nothing felt like a fraud at the beginning, most of the middle, and a surprising amount of the end. If you are waiting for the confidence to come first, you are waiting for a bus that only runs after you have already walked to town.
So the honest answer is that readiness is the wrong thing to measure. But that does not mean the answer is simply leap, because most of the advice that says leap is written by people who happened to land well and have quietly forgotten the ones who did not.
The useful answer is smaller
Do not ask whether you are ready. Ask what the smallest real version of this is, and whether you can survive it going wrong.
The smallest real version is not a plan and not a logo and not a year of preparation. It is the first genuine time a stranger, not a friend, not your mother, is asked to give you something they care about, usually money or time, in exchange for the thing you make. Everything before that first real exchange is rehearsal, and rehearsal is comfortable, which is exactly why people stay in it for years. The plan feels like progress. It is not progress. It is very well organised waiting.
What actually needs protecting
The thing to protect is not your pride and not your original idea, which will be wrong in ways you cannot yet see. The thing to protect is your ability to still be standing after the first version fails, because it will, and the whole game is whether you are close enough to the ground when it does to get up and try the next version cheaply.
That is what people really mean, or should mean, when they talk about being sensible. Not waiting until it is safe. Arranging things so that the first failure is small enough to teach you something rather than large enough to end you. Keep the early bets survivable and you buy yourself the one resource that actually matters, which is more attempts.

So, to my reader, and to anyone standing at the same edge: you are not ready, and you never will be, and that is not the question. The question is whether you can make the first attempt small enough and real enough that a stranger gets to say no to you. Get to the first real no as fast and as cheaply as you can. It will teach you more in an afternoon than another year of planning, and it costs, in the end, so much less than the waiting does.
