Field notes from the edge of town
Life at the edge of town is more stubborn and more local than we credit: it needs only a crack, a puddle that lasts, a verge left alone for three summers.
I keep a notebook that is mostly a list of things that never read the sign at the edge of town, the one that says the wild stops here. It does not. It only gets quieter and harder to notice, which is not the same thing at all. Here are some of the entries, tidied up a little, from a patch of ground no wider than a walk to the shops.
The drain behind the retail park. Two winters ago it was a concrete channel with a trickle in the bottom and a shopping trolley on its side. Something shifted, a blockage upstream, a wet spring, and now there is a proper little run of water with a fringe of green along it. A moorhen turned up in March. One moorhen is an accident. When there were three, and then a nest, I started counting properly.
The flat roof of the supermarket. From the top deck of the car park you can see it, and in early summer it is a colony. Gulls, mostly, raising their scruffy grey young on a surface designed to shed rainwater and hold air conditioning units. Nobody planned it. The birds simply read a flat gravel roof as the cliff it resembles and moved in. The staff have opinions. The gulls do not care.
The verge by the ring road that the council stopped mowing. This is my favourite entry because it is the slowest. The first summer it was rank grass and not much else. The second, knapweed and a haze of small hoverflies. By the third I counted eleven kinds of flowering plant in a strip you could cross in four strides, and a number of bees I am not confident enough to name, which is its own kind of progress.
The counting is the point. A single sighting is a story. A number, gathered patiently over years, is closer to the truth.
The buddleia in the gutter of the empty unit. Everyone knows this one, the butterfly bush that grows out of mortar and neglect, purple and full of red admirals in August. We treat it as a weed, which only means a plant thriving where we did not invite it. I have watched that one bush feed more butterflies in a fortnight than the tended flowerbed by the library manages all year.
I want to be honest about the other column in the notebook, the one that goes the other way. The swifts that used to scream around my street in July are down to a pair, where once there were a dozen. The old wall that had a lizard on it every warm afternoon was repointed, tidily, and the lizards are gone. Loss is in the notebook too, and I will not pretend it is not.
But I have decided not to let the losses be the whole story, because that is not what the notebook says. What the notebook says, read end to end, is that life is far more stubborn and far more local than we give it credit for. It does not need the grand wilderness. It needs a crack, a puddle that lasts, a verge left alone for three summers by someone who forgot or could not be bothered. Neglect, it turns out, is sometimes the kindest thing we do.
So I keep counting. It takes years to mean anything, and most of what I write down comes to nothing, and then a moorhen builds a nest behind a retail park and the whole patient business pays for itself in an afternoon.
