Field notes from the week the light turned

A week of ordinary noticings from the walk between the car park and the canal, as a place decides it is autumn.

by Brynn Halloway 2 minute read

The clocks have not gone back yet, but the light has already changed its mind. Here is a week of it, taken from the usual short walk between the car park and the canal, notebook in a coat pocket, nothing rare, nothing that would make a county record. Only the ordinary business of a place deciding it is autumn.

Monday. The swifts have been gone for weeks, but I still look up at the gap over the chip shop where they used to scream round in the evening. The sky there is just sky now. You keep the habit longer than the birds keep the appointment.

Tuesday. A buddleia growing out of a crack three feet up a brick wall, well past flowering, every spike gone to brown seed, and a single late red admiral working it anyway as if nobody had told it the season was over. It let me stand a foot away. Cold slows them into tameness.

Wednesday. The drain that runs behind the retail units has turned into a proper little stream again after the rain, and something has noticed: a grey wagtail, which is the bright yellow one despite the name, walking the concrete edge and bobbing as if it were a mountain beck and not a gap behind a tyre fitter.

Thursday. Leaves down overnight on the one lime tree the council left, and the smell of them going over, which is a smell I have never found the right word for. Sweet is wrong. Mushroom is wrong. It is the smell of a year composting itself and getting on with it.

Friday. Fieldfares, I think, high and going over in a loose rattle, the first of the winter thrushes coming in from the cold places to spend the dark months eating our hedges. They arrive as others leave. The car park does not know it is a migration stopover, but it is.

Saturday. Spiders. Every railing strung overnight, every web hung with the particular heavy dew of the first cold mornings, and for about forty minutes after sunrise the whole fence is jewellery. By nine it has burned off and it is a fence again.

Sunday. Nothing. A grey morning, the canal flat and brown, not one thing worth writing down. I wrote that down. A week of noticing teaches you that the empty days are part of the count too, and that a place you have decided to pay attention to will never be completely silent, even when it is telling you only that it is tired and wants the winter.

None of this is wilderness. That is rather the point. The wildlife round here never got the memo about wild places, and quietly made do with the drain, the wall and the one tree that survived the car park. It does not need a nature reserve to do what it does. It needs somebody to keep the notebook.

If your walk runs beside a canal, Every Drain Remembers a Stream follows city water from the drain to the sea, and the otters, eels and salmon finding their way back to it.

House rules

  • Sign how you like, but be one person. You may use the name on your account, a name of your own choosing, or none at all. What you may not do is wear somebody else's: no pen name of ours, no member's name but your own, and nothing that reads as the studio or its staff.
  • Argue with the point, not the person. Robust disagreement is welcome; contempt is not.
  • Nothing unlawful, hateful or harassing, nothing that identifies a private individual, and no advertising.
  • Post only what is yours to post. That includes other people's writing and private correspondence.
  • We may hide a remark, remove it, or close an account to the discussions, and we may do so without notice.

What a chosen name is and is not

A chosen name hides you from the room, not from us. Every remark stays linked to the account that wrote it, and the studio can see that link whenever it needs to. Please treat it as a way to speak freely, not as a way to say something you would not put your name to.

Where responsibility sits
