Seven things the kopitiam knows before the town wakes up
The coffee shop at the corner opens before the sea is properly light, and it keeps a record of us whether we like it or not.
The kopitiam on the corner opens before the sea is properly light. I am there most mornings, not because I am disciplined but because the coffee is correct and the chairs do not match, and a writer should sit somewhere that does not take itself seriously. Here is some of what the place has taught me, which is to say, here is some of what I have stolen.
The first uncle in is always the one who sleeps the worst. He does not order. The kopi comes to him. This is not service, it is memory, and the two have been confused on purpose for about thirty years.
The toast is the only clock anyone trusts. When the smell of it changes from bread to almost burnt, the schoolchildren are late, and three mothers stand up at once without a word passing between them.
Nobody sits at the wobbly table on purpose, but the person who ends up there talks the most, as though the wobble has shaken something loose. I have written two characters out of that table and I owe it a third.
The old men argue about football with a seriousness they will not spend on anything that could actually be fixed. I have come to think this is wisdom and not avoidance. You keep the big grief in a small box and you shout about a penalty instead, and you go home a little lighter.
A cat owns the doorway and allows us to use it. When it leaves, the regulars notice before they notice the weather. I have seen a grown man change his route to the counter rather than disturb it, and I understood him completely.
The woman who runs the till does not remember your name but remembers your order, your usual seat, and the week you did not come in. She asked after me once, after I had been away, in exactly four words, and I have not written a reunion scene as good as those four words, and I have tried.
Last of the morning rush, the place empties all at once, the way a tide goes out, and for about ten minutes it is only me and the fans and the sound of cups being stacked. That is when I write. Not because it is quiet. Because it is quiet after being full, which is a different and better kind of quiet, the kind that still has people in it even when they have gone.
That is the whole trick of writing about a place, if it is a trick. You do not describe the place. You describe what it remembers, and you let the reader feel remembered too. The kopitiam does not know it is teaching anything. It only knows your order, and the week you did not come in, and somehow that has always been enough.
Kedai Kopi Wah Seng keeps its own record of a town in Kopitiam Stories, Vol. 3, nine mornings where breakfast is never only breakfast.
