The most romantic thing a person can do is pay attention

We give passion far too much credit. It gets the covers, the swelling music, the word love itself, and it deserves some of that, I will not pretend I do not write it. But passion is not the thing that makes a reader press a hand to the page and refuse to put a book down. The thing that does that, in every love story I have ever loved, is attention. One person, fully, unbearably paying attention to another. The heat is only the smoke off it.

Think about what actually undoes you in a good romance. It is almost never the grand declaration, which tends to arrive too polished to trust. It is the small evidence that one of them has been watching. He knows she takes her coffee and then forgets it, and drinks it cold, and he has started making a second cup she will also forget, without comment, without credit, simply because he noticed and could not help himself. That is the moment the reader falls, well before either character does, because that is what love looks like when you strip the orchestra off it. It looks like being noticed by someone who was under no obligation to notice you.

This is why the long look across the room works, and why I keep writing it even though it is the oldest move in the drawer. The look is not desire, or not only. The look is attention made visible for a second, the fact of being seen catching the light. And it is why the villain of a love story is so rarely a rival and so often distraction: the phone, the work, the hundred small claims on a person that mean they are in the room but not attending to it. You do not need a love triangle to break two people. You only need one of them to stop looking up.

I think this is also why so many people say they want romance and mean, underneath it, that they want to be paid attention to by someone who chooses to. We are all a little starved of it. The world is arranged to divide our notice into smaller and smaller pieces, and a love story is one of the few places left where a person gives their whole attention to one other person and keeps giving it for three hundred pages. That is the fantasy. Not the kiss. The kiss is easy. The undivided attention is the rare and precious thing, and it is the thing the kiss is standing in for.

So when readers ask me how to write chemistry, and they do ask, I have stopped talking about tension and started talking about noticing. Show me what one of them sees that no one else in the room has bothered to see. Give me the cold coffee, the folded sleeve, the particular way she says a word when she is lying and thinks she is getting away with it, and the fact that he has learned it. Do that, and you will not need to write the heat. The reader will supply it themselves, gratefully, because you have shown them the only thing that has ever actually meant love. Someone was watching. Someone stayed.
