The unremarkable things that turn friends into family
Nobody announces it; you look up one ordinary afternoon and realise these are your people now.
Nobody sends a card. There is no ceremony, no certificate, no moment where somebody stands up and says, congratulations, you are now officially each other's. It happens in the gaps, quietly, while you are busy doing something else, and you only notice afterwards, if you notice at all. So here is what I have taught myself to look for, the little tells that a group of friends has become something sturdier and harder to leave.
When they stop asking before they take the last chip. Early on everyone is polite. You offer, they decline, you insist, they relent. The friendship has arrived the day somebody just takes it, and you are mildly outraged, and nobody apologises.
When your bad news goes to them first, before it goes to the people you are related to, because you already know exactly what your family will say and you want to feel the thing before you have to manage it.
When one of them makes your drink without asking how you take it, and gets it right, and does not make a performance of getting it right.
When the group chat survives one of you being genuinely awful at two in the morning, and in the cold light of the next day nobody leaves, nobody screenshots it, and the worst anyone does is send a single unimpressed photograph of a houseplant.
When you can be in the same room and not talk and it is not weird. This one took me years to understand. As a kid I thought closeness was constant noise. It is actually the silence you are allowed.
When they turn up for the boring thing. Not the party, anyone comes to the party. The moving van, the waiting room, the long dull Tuesday when you need a second pair of hands and a reason not to cry in front of a stranger. Found family is mostly logistics. It is who answers the phone.
When they are rude to you the specific way only family is rude, the teasing that would be a declaration of war from anyone else, and it lands, somehow, as the warmest thing you will hear all week.
When you catch yourself saying my friend and it feels too small, and some other word is pushing up underneath it that you are not quite ready to use out loud.
I used to think a family was the people you were handed and a friend was someone you chose, and that the first was serious and the second was a sort of hobby. I had it backwards. The people you are handed are an accident of a waiting room. The people who become your family on purpose, who keep choosing you on the Tuesdays, those are the ones who have actually looked at the whole of you, the last chip and the two in the morning and all of it, and decided, with full information, to stay. That is not a smaller thing than family. On the hard days I have come to think it might be the larger one.
Found families are hard to plan and easy to recognise, and The Comet Year starts with a girl who has decided not to unpack anything at all.
