The word that ruins the number

There is a figure people carry around in their heads, the amount they believe they will need before they can finally stop worrying, and I have noticed something odd about it over the years. It moves. It is never the figure you named five years ago. You reach the old one, or somewhere near it, and instead of the relief you were promised, the figure quietly steps back the same distance you stepped forward, and you are exactly as far from rest as you always were. I have watched this happen to people who by any sensible measure have won, and it is the saddest arithmetic I know.

The treadmill has a name

Economists have a plain term for it, and the plainness is the point: the more you have, the more your idea of normal rises to meet it. The car that was a treat becomes the car you simply have. The dinner that was an occasion becomes a Tuesday. None of this is foolish or greedy. It is just what human beings do, which is get used to things, and getting used to things is a wonderful survival trick and a terrible financial one, because it means the ground under your contentment keeps rising, and you have to run to stay on the same spot.

The trouble is that the whole apparatus around money is built to keep that ground rising. Nobody profits from you deciding you have enough. There is no advertisement for the sofa you already own.

The question nobody puts on the envelope

So here is the question I think is worth more than any target figure, and I ask it of myself once a year, usually somewhere quiet. Not how much do I need. That question has no floor. The better one is: what would actually change about my day if the number were larger.

For a great many people, past a certain point, the honest answer is very little. The morning coffee is the same coffee. The walk is the same walk. The people at the table are the same people, and they are the whole of it. When you sit with that honestly, the figure stops being a wall you are climbing and becomes something far more manageable, which is a floor you are standing on.

A target with no ceiling is not a goal. It is a treadmill you bought and thanked the salesman for.

Enough is a decision, not a discovery

I grew up watching an uncle keep the same small car for twelve years, long after he could have changed it, and then pay cash for the modest one that eventually replaced it. People thought him careful. I think now he had simply done the sum once, decided what enough looked like for him, and then had the far rarer discipline of not reopening the question every time someone parked something newer beside him.

That is the part I want to leave you with, because it is the only part I am sure of. Enough is not a number the market hands you when you have finally earned it. The market does not deal in enough. Enough is a line you draw yourself, on purpose, and then defend, quietly, against a world that makes very good money from you never drawing it at all.

None of this is advice about what to buy or what to own. It is only a suggestion about where to point the question. The figure will look after itself far better than you expect, once you have stopped asking it to do a job it was never able to do, which is to tell you when you are allowed to be content.
