Where Did the Years Go? begins with a woman of eighty four looking at a photograph of herself at eight, on a beach, in a summer that she remembers as lasting a whole lifetime, and asking the narrator the question the book is named for. It is a question almost every adult has asked, and it turns out to have several good answers, none of them complete on their own, and the book takes them one at a time in the company of a small circle of companions: a curious narrator, an astrophysicist who understands the physics of time, a sceptical physicist who insists on evidence, a graduate student, a neuroscientist who studies the brain's clock, and the eighty four year old witness whose whole life is the experiment.
