Kingdoms Beneath Our Feet begins with a door. Across the world, in old stories from every continent, there is a doorway into the ground, and beyond it a hidden country: warm, lit from within, inhabited by beings older than ourselves. The narrator sets out to understand why that story is so universal, in the company of a small circle: a geophysicist who listens to earthquakes, a sceptical physicist who demands proof, a graduate student, and a cave explorer who believes, sincerely and thoughtfully, that the inner world is real and that the evidence is being kept from us.
