One with sugar, one without
I watched two people order breakfast this morning and understood, again, that the most romantic thing I know how to write is not a declaration but a habit.
There is a cafe near me that does a decent kaya toast and a terrible playlist, and I go there to eavesdrop, which is most of my job dressed up as breakfast.
This morning an older couple came in and sat two tables away. I noticed them the way you notice weather changing: not all at once, just a growing awareness that something in the room had settled. They did not talk much. They did not need to. He went to the counter, and by the time the woman behind it looked up he had already lifted two fingers and tilted his head a particular way, and she nodded and started making two drinks without a word being said. One with sugar. One without. He carried them back and set the one without in front of the woman, and she did not thank him, and that was the most romantic thing I saw all week.
I write love for a living, and readers sometimes tell me they want the big moment: the declaration in the rain, the sentence that changes everything. I love those too. I have built whole books to arrive at one. But the big moment is not where love actually lives. Love lives in the sugar. It lives in a man who has bought the same two coffees so many mornings that his order has worn a groove into the day, one with and one without, and who no longer has to check which of them takes which.
What I was watching, really, was memory made physical. Every one of those silent mornings was folded into this one. He knew her order because he had been paying attention for longer than I have been alive, and paying attention, I keep saying, is the whole of it. Chemistry on the page is not two people discovering each other. It is two people who already know, and are choosing each other again anyway, quietly, over toast, on a Tuesday.
The couple finished, and she gathered the plates without being asked, and he held the door, and neither of them made a thing of it. No music swelled. The terrible playlist kept being terrible. They stepped out into the ordinary morning and were gone.
I stayed and finished my toast and thought about the scene I have been struggling with all week, the one where two people who love each other are meant to say so. I have been writing it too loud. I have been reaching for the declaration when what the moment wants is the coffee. So I think I will go home and let them not say it. I will let one of them simply know how the other takes their drink, and set it down, and hold the door.
That will be enough. It usually is.
