Small things noticed before the coffee came
A morning at the corner kopitiam, and the things it told me while I waited that I did not think to ask.
I got to the kopitiam early today, before the fan had shaken off its overnight stiffness, and because my order was slow to arrive I did the only thing worth doing at a corner table, which is watch. Here is what the morning handed me, in the order it came.
The uncle who opens the place does not unlock the door first. He unlocks the fridge, checks the milk, and only then turns the sign. Priorities, I thought. The customers can wait outside for a minute. The kopi cannot be wrong.
There is a precise sound a kopitiam makes at seven in the morning that it makes at no other hour. The clatter of cups being set out is louder because the street is quieter, and every spoon sounds like an announcement. By nine you will not hear a single one of them. The noise has not changed. Your ears have simply given up trying.
A schoolboy came in alone, bought a packet of nasi lemak wrapped in paper, and left without a word, and the woman at the counter had it ready before he reached her. Same boy, same time, same order, I would guess, for a whole term. The kopitiam remembers people the way a house remembers where the light switch is: in the hands, not the head.
Two taxi drivers argued cheerfully about a football result while sharing a table with a man reading a newspaper who was clearly not part of the conversation and equally clearly enjoying it. Three strangers, one table, no introductions. This is a thing the kopitiam does that a grander place cannot: it seats you shoulder to shoulder with your neighbours and lets you belong without anyone deciding you should.
The kaya was scraped from a jar that was nearly empty, and the aunty scraped it thoroughly, getting the corners, because waste is a kind of rudeness to the person who made it. Nobody was watching her do it. That is exactly why I noticed.
An old man came in, did not order, sat down, and was brought a kopi o kosong without asking. He drank half of it, read the racing page, said something that made the counter laugh, and left the other half. I do not think he came for the coffee. The coffee was the ticket. The room was the show.
By the time my own order arrived, warm and too sweet and exactly right, the place had filled, the fan had loosened up, and the announcements of the spoons had gone quiet under the general noise. The morning had stopped telling me things. It only talks like that in the first half hour, before the day gets loud enough to drown it.
I paid, I left the aunty the coins, and I walked out into a street that was now fully awake and much less honest than it had been at seven. The best conversations a place has are the ones it holds with itself before the customers arrive. If you want to hear them, you have to be early, and you have to be willing to let your coffee go cold while you listen.
If you like to be early and listen, Kopitiam Stories, Vol. 1 has nine stories overheard, half imagined, and pressed straight from the coffee shop tables.
