Small permissions I have been handing myself lately
Not resolutions, not a system, just a handful of things I have stopped apologising for.
I do not make resolutions anymore, because I have noticed that a resolution is mostly a way of being disappointed in yourself on a schedule. What I have instead is a short and growing list of permissions, small things I have decided I am allowed to do. I collect them the way other people collect habits. Here are the ones I have picked up this season.
Permission to leave the book unfinished. I used to treat a half read book as a small debt. Now I think of a book I put down as a book that did its job for as long as it held me, and no longer owes me anything. The shelf of the abandoned is not a shelf of failures. It is a record of an honest reader.
Permission to do the thing badly first. The walk that is only ten minutes because that is all there was. The page that is clumsy because it is the first one. I have watched more good habits die of their own high standards than of laziness. A small, ugly, completed version of the thing beats the beautiful version you keep not starting.
Permission to be bored on purpose. I have started leaving one gap in the day with nothing booked into it. No podcast, no list, no improving use. It feels, at first, like doing something wrong. Then, after a few minutes, it feels like the quietest room in the house, and I remember that I used to live there.
Permission to change the plan without a reason. If the morning says walk and the body says sit, I have decided the body gets a vote and does not have to file paperwork to use it. The plan was a guess I made yesterday. Today knows things yesterday did not.
Permission to be a beginner in public. I took up something new in the summer and I am still comically bad at it. For a while I only practised where nobody could see. This season I have been practising where people can, and the sky has not fallen, and one or two kind strangers have smiled rather than laughed.
Permission to count the small win. I made the tea. I answered the one email I had been dreading. I went outside before noon. On the hard days these are not nothing. They are the whole of the win, and I have stopped pretending they do not count just because they are easy to say out loud.
None of these needs a five in the morning alarm, which is the only firm rule I keep. They do not need an app or a streak either, which is the second. They need only that you notice, once in a while, how much of what tires you is not the work but the low background hum of telling yourself off. Turn that down, even a little, and you would be surprised how much walking you can do.
A permission is a small brave thing, and Small Brave Things is about practising those deliberately, until courage stops feeling like something you were born without.
