You do not owe the new season a new you

Something happens to people around now, when the light shortens and the mornings get their edge back, and I would like to talk you out of it before it costs you the whole autumn. The something is a feeling that a new season is a starting gun. The shops have been suggesting it for weeks. The notebooks are out, the calendars are suddenly clean, and there is a particular voice, not quite your own, telling you that this is the moment you finally become the organised, disciplined, transformed person you have been promising to build since roughly the age of nineteen.

I want you to notice that voice, and then gently ignore it, because it is about to ask you to change six things at once and it is going to use the weather as the excuse. In eleven days you will have kept none of the six, and you will feel worse than if you had never begun, and the reason will not be that you are weak. It will be that the plan was never designed by anyone who has to live your actual life, with its actual Tuesdays, its ordinary tiredness, its small emergencies that quietly eat the hour you had set aside for becoming magnificent. This is the whole trap of the fresh start. It borrows all its energy from the fantasy of a clean slate and none of it from the grubby truth that you already have a life in progress, and a life in progress is the only place real change has ever actually happened: in the cracks, one repeatable thing at a time.

So if the season really has stirred something in you, and it is allowed to, spend that stirring on exactly one thing. The smallest honest version of it. Ten minutes rather than two hours, one walk rather than a training plan, a single chapter rather than the finished book. Let it be almost embarrassingly modest, because a modest thing you actually do beats a magnificent thing you only announce, every single time. The person who reaches the far side of winter having done one small thing steadily is miles ahead of the person who overhauled everything for a fortnight and spent October quietly ashamed. I have been both of those people more than once, and I am telling you from experience that the season does not need you to become someone else. It just turned up, the way it always does, indifferent and lovely and asking for nothing. You are allowed to meet it exactly as you are, with one small kept promise in your pocket. That is more than enough. It is, in the end, the only kind of change that has ever really worked.
