Small signs that two people are in trouble, noticed on a Tuesday
The beginning of a love story rarely announces itself, but it leaves clues, and I have made a habit of collecting them.
I write romance for a living, which means I spend a great deal of my time watching for the moment a story starts before either person in it knows it has. It almost never arrives with music. It arrives as a series of very small things, and here are some of the ones I keep coming back to.
The first is distance. Two people who have decided nothing yet will stand exactly one polite step too far apart, as though the extra few inches were a rule neither of them made and neither dares break. You can read the whole thing in that gap. Nobody stands that carefully near a person they do not think about.
The second is the interrupted sentence. He begins to say something, thinks better of it, and lands on a smaller, safer version instead. She notices the swerve. She always notices the swerve. What was almost said is now sitting in the room with both of them, and it does not intend to leave.
The third is the way a name is used. There is a particular weight people give a name when they have started saying it privately, to themselves, before they are allowed to say it aloud. When it finally surfaces in conversation it comes out a fraction too deliberately, like a coin that has been turned over in a pocket all afternoon.
The fourth is the errand that did not need doing. She could have sent a message. She walks over instead. He could have forwarded the file. He brings it. Nobody in the history of the world has ever gone the long way round for a person they are indifferent to, and yet we all agree to pretend the long way was simply more convenient.
The fifth is laughter that arrives a beat too fast. Not the polite kind. The kind that escapes before it can be approved, at a joke that was not really that funny, because the body has decided something the mind is still refusing to sign off on.
The sixth is a silence that has stopped being awkward. Two strangers cannot bear a pause and rush to fill it. Two people on their way to something will let a silence sit, and neither will reach for a phone, and the silence will do more work than any of the talking managed.
I could go on, and in the books I do, because a whole novel is really only this list stretched out and given names and a reason to matter. But the reason I love writing the beginning is that the beginning is honest in a way the grand declarations never quite are. By the time anyone says the enormous words out loud, they are only confirming what the polite gap and the swerved sentence and the unnecessary errand had already said first, and said better.
Watch for the small things. They are always talking. The people they belong to are usually the last in the room to hear them.
Ordinary weekdays matter in The Mail Boat, where an old boat crosses to Sorrel Island every day but Sunday, until she fails her survey and the mainland wants to end the route.
