You are not the person who made the promise
We keep our word to people that the one who gave it no longer entirely is, and that puzzle is older and stranger than it looks.
Consider a promise you made a long time ago. Not a small one, a real one, the kind you organised part of your life around. Now consider that almost every cell in the body that made it has since been replaced, that your opinions have shifted, that you have forgotten the afternoon it happened and could not tell me now what the weather was doing or what you were afraid of. In what sense is the person who must keep that promise the same person who made it?
I want to give the strongest version of the case that says they are not, because it is better than people assume. The body is not the same body. The mind is demonstrably not the same mind; you hold beliefs now that the younger one would have argued with, and you would lose the argument in both directions. There is no small unchanging pearl of self that anyone has ever managed to locate, however carefully we have looked. What we call a person seems to be less like a statue and more like a river that keeps its name while none of the water stays. And we do not usually think a river owes anything to the shape it held last spring.
If you follow that argument honestly it becomes uncomfortable quickly. Push it far enough and no promise binds anyone, because the one who gave it is always, strictly, gone. No debt survives the night. No vow outlasts the week it was spoken, except in a legal sense. I do not think many people can actually live inside that conclusion, and I take the fact that we cannot as worth something, though not as a knockdown reply.
Here is what I think the argument gets wrong, and it is subtle. It treats being the same person as a thing you either are or are not, like being the same coin. But sameness across time might be less a fact about the water and more a practice we keep up. I am joined to the one who made the promise not by an unchanging core but by a chain of overlapping care: he remembered the day, and told the me of a year later, who told the me of the year after that, each of us handing the promise forward like a lit candle passed hand to hand down a line. The flame at the far end is not the flame that was struck. It is also not a different fire.
On that view, keeping the promise is not something imposed on me from outside by a stranger I happen to share a name with. It is part of what makes me continuous with him at all. I keep his word, and in doing so I am him, a little more than I would be if I let it drop. The obligation and the identity turn out to be the same thread seen from its two ends.
I am not sure this settles anything, and I notice the question does not leave when I am done with it, which is usually the sign that a question is a good one. It comes back every time I keep a promise I no longer feel like keeping and find, to my mild surprise, that I would rather be the sort of continuous thing that does.
That puzzle has a whole book in Yesterday Has a Vote: what persists when we change, and how promises give yesterday a voice without giving it the final word.
