Small things that are wrong in the right light

A horror writer is supposed to carry a head full of monsters. Mine is duller than that, and more useful. What I keep instead is a list of small, ordinary things that are almost fine, and a note of exactly how they tip over into not being fine. I add to it when one catches me. Here is a page of it, none of it invented, all of it collected from ordinary days.

A door you are certain you closed, standing open when you come back to the room. Nothing has been taken. Nothing has been moved. It is simply open, and now you are recounting your own afternoon to yourself, and finding a gap in it.

The sound of the house settling, which is the phrase we use so that we do not have to think about a house that makes noises on its own schedule. We have a soothing word ready for it. That is the interesting part. We needed one.

A photograph in which everyone is smiling at the camera except one person, at the back, who is looking at something just off the edge of the frame. You will never know what. The photograph is forty years old. Whatever it was is long over. You look anyway.

Your own reflection in a dark window at night, when you are inside and the garden is black, and for a fraction of a second you cannot tell whether the figure is on your side of the glass or the other.

A voice that says your name once, clearly, in an empty flat, in the exact tone of someone you know, at the moment between sleeping and waking. There is a tidy account of why this happens. It does not help at all, and I have stopped reaching for it.

The pause on a telephone line before the other person speaks, one beat too long, so that you say hello a second time into what might be nobody.

A staircase in the dark where you reach for one more step that is not there. The body keeps the count better than the mind does, and the lurch of that missing stair is the purest small fright I know, gone in an instant, entirely harmless, and never once boring.

I could go on, and the notebook does. But you will have noticed the thing these all share, which is that not one of them is dangerous. The open door harms nobody. The pause on the line is only a pause. What unsettles us is never the threat. It is the small tear in the ordinary, the moment when a familiar thing behaves by rules we did not agree to, and we glimpse how thin the arrangement is that we have been calling normal.

That is the whole trick, and it is not really a trick at all. I do not need to invent anything. I only have to notice the places where the world is already, very slightly, ajar, and hold the lamp there a moment longer than is comfortable. The dark does the rest, as it always has, without any help from me.
