The quiet that comes before the dark
There is an hour on an autumn evening when the birds stop and nothing takes their place, and I have never learned to like it.
There is a stretch of path I have walked for years, along the top of a field and down through a line of old trees to the road. In summer I can walk it late and think nothing of it. In autumn there is an hour, and it moves earlier every week, when I would rather not be on it at all.
It is not the dark. The dark is honest. You can see it coming, you can name it, and once it has arrived you know where you stand. What unsettles me is the quiet that comes just before, in the last of the grey light, when the birds have finished for the day and nothing has yet started for the night.
For most of the year the evening is full of sound you stop hearing. Rooks arguing in the high branches, a blackbird running through its list, the small industry of things settling. Then one evening in autumn you notice that all of it has stopped, and stopped early, and that the field is holding its breath. There is no wind. The trees are perfectly still. And the stillness does not feel like peace. It feels like attention.
I do not believe there is anything in the trees. I want to be clear about that, because it is exactly what I would tell anyone else who told me this. There is nothing in the trees. There is a hedge, and beyond the hedge a field I have crossed a thousand times, and beyond that a road with cars on it and people in the cars thinking about their supper. I know all of this. I have walked out and checked, on braver evenings, and found precisely the nothing I expected.
And yet. The mind that keeps you alive on a dark path is much older than the mind that knows there is nothing in the trees, and it does not care what you know. It cares that the birds stopped early, and that they stopped all at once, and it would like you to walk a little faster now please, and not look too long at the gap in the hedge where the light gives out.
So I walk faster. I am a grown man and I walk faster, down through the trees and out onto the road, where the lamps have that first orange bloom in them and a car goes by and the world is ordinary again. And every autumn I promise myself that next year I will stand in that field at that hour and simply wait, and let the quiet be only quiet, and prove to myself that nothing bad happens.
I never do. I get to the field, the birds stop, the trees go still, and some part of me that has been in charge of exactly this since long before there were books remembers its one job and marches me home. I put the hall light on. I always put the hall light on. And then I sit down, in a warm bright room, to write about the thing I was too sensible to be afraid of and too honest to pretend I wasn't.
That hour stretches into whole weeks in The Quiet Weeks, where a village keeps a seven-generation custom of silence after dark between the first snow and the solstice.
