Small evidence
A romance writer's running list of the tiny things people do that give the whole game away.
I watch people. I should probably confess it up front, because if you and I are ever in the same cafe I am at least partly there for you. Not in a way that would trouble you. I just believe that most of what a love story is made of is happening at the other tables, and that people show it far more honestly than they ever say it. I keep a list. Here is some of what is on it.
The person who saves the aisle seat by putting their bag on it, then quietly moves the bag the moment the other one appears, without either of them mentioning that the bag was ever there.
The umbrella held at the wrong angle. You can always tell who is being kept dry, because the person holding it is getting a wet shoulder and has decided not to notice.
Someone learning a recipe off a voicemail. Playing it, pausing it, stirring, playing it again, because the person who used to make this is not in the room and this is the nearest thing to having them there.
The playlist made in secret and then left playing by accident when the other one gets in the car.
Two people reading the same menu they have both read a hundred times, at the place they always go, ordering the thing they always order, and still reading it, because the reading was never about the food.
Nobody in love says very much about it. They are too busy doing the small unremarkable things that give them away.
The walk to the bus stop taken the long way round, so that there is more of it.
The text read twice. Once for what it says, once because it is from them.
The pause. The one where a question has been asked and the answer is obvious and easy and yes, and it still takes a second, because the person wants to hold the moment just before the yes for as long as they honestly can.
That last one is the one I steal most. It is where I live, as a writer: the beat before, when everything is still possible and nothing has been risked. People think a love story is the kiss. It is almost never the kiss. It is the second before it, when two people are still pretending, very badly, that they do not already know.
I will keep watching. It is the least lonely thing I know how to do.

What a chosen name is and is not
A chosen name hides you from the room, not from us. Every remark stays linked to the account that wrote it, and the studio can see that link whenever it needs to. Please treat it as a way to speak freely, not as a way to say something you would not put your name to.
