Small things the September walk keeps showing me

Not a programme, not a plan, just a list of what the early morning hands over if you go out into it.

by Tamsin Hale 2 minute read

The mornings have turned. Not cold, not here, but changed, the way a room changes when someone opens a window in the next street. I have been walking early for years and I still keep a small list of what the season hands over, and this is roughly this week's.

The light arrives later and lower. For a few minutes everything has a long shadow, the bins, the lamp posts, me, and then the sun lifts and takes the drama away. If you want the theatrical version of your own street, half past six in late September is when it is showing.

The air has a smell it did not have in August. Something between damp leaves and cold stone. I cannot describe it better than that and I have stopped trying. I just notice that I breathe more deeply when it is there, without deciding to.

The body is slower to start and I have made my peace with that. The first five minutes are a negotiation. Somewhere in the sixth or seventh the negotiation quietly ends and I forget I was ever reluctant, and that turn, from unwilling to simply walking, is the part I go out for.

The other early people are the same people. The man with the two small dogs. The woman who runs and never looks up. The one who stands at the corner with a coffee and watches the road as if waiting for news. We do not speak. We nod, or we do not, and there is a kind of company in it that asks nothing.

Nothing about the walk is urgent and that is the whole point of it. I am not chasing a number. I am not fixing anything. I go out, I come back, and the day that follows is slightly better arranged in my head than it would have been, though I could not tell you the mechanism and I am suspicious of anyone who claims to.

The hands are cold by the time I am home and the tea is very good because of it. This is not a small thing. A great deal of what makes a habit last is a plain pleasure waiting at the end of it, and mine is a hot cup held in two cold hands at a kitchen table while the street wakes up outside.

I write about the body for a living and people expect me to arrive with a plan. Most weeks I do have one. But some weeks the only honest thing to report is that I went outside in the ordinary early dark of a changing season, noticed a handful of small things, and came back slightly more myself. You are allowed to count that. I do.

  • Sign how you like, but be one person. You may use the name on your account, a name of your own choosing, or none at all. What you may not do is wear somebody else's: no pen name of ours, no member's name but your own, and nothing that reads as the studio or its staff.
  • Argue with the point, not the person. Robust disagreement is welcome; contempt is not.

What a chosen name is and is not

A chosen name hides you from the room, not from us. Every remark stays linked to the account that wrote it, and the studio can see that link whenever it needs to. Please treat it as a way to speak freely, not as a way to say something you would not put your name to.
