The small lies the love story tells
A romance writer on the things fiction keeps getting wrong about the moment two people first notice each other.
I have written the moment two people realise it for the best part of thirty books, and I still get letters telling me it does not happen like that. Sometimes they are right. Here is a short account of the things the love story tends to fudge, offered by someone who fudges them for a living and knows exactly where the seams are.
It is almost never the eyes. Fiction loves the long look across the room, and I have sold plenty of them, but attraction in real life arrives sideways. It comes in on a voice heard before the face is seen, on the specific way someone folds a receipt, on a laugh that runs half a second longer than the joke deserved. The eyes get the credit later, in the retelling, because they are the easiest thing to describe.
The first conversation is not clever. In novels the two of them spar like a pair of duellists who have rehearsed for weeks. In life the first real conversation is mostly weather, mostly nerves, and mostly one person saying something slightly too honest and then apologising for it. The wit turns up on the third meeting, when there is finally something to be witty about.
Nobody knows it is the beginning while it is the beginning. This is the one I fight my editor over. The love story wants the character to feel the ground move. Real people feel almost nothing at the time, and only later, sorting back through an ordinary Tuesday, notice that this was the Tuesday. The beginning is only a beginning in hindsight, which is a terrible thing for a plot and a true thing for a life.
We do not fall at the moment we fall. We fall at the moment we admit we already have.
Distance is not the enemy. Stories treat every obstacle as cruelty: the missed call, the wrong address, the friend who says the wrong thing. But the ache of almost is not an accident to be cleared out of the way. It is the whole engine. A romance with no pauses is just an inventory of two people agreeing. The pause is where the reader gets to hope, and hope is the thing they actually came for.
And the confession is quieter than we write it. On the page it is a speech in the rain. In practice it is four badly chosen words, said too fast, at the wrong time, in a kitchen, immediately regretted and never taken back. The grand version exists to be filmed. The small version exists to be believed.
I will keep writing the long look and the speech in the rain, because a reader is allowed to want the better version of their own life, and it is my job to hand it over polished. But I try to smuggle the true thing in underneath: the sideways arrival, the weather, the Tuesday nobody clocked. That is the part that makes a stranger write to me years later to say it happened to them exactly so. It never did, of course. It happened sideways, the way it always does. But they remember the polished one, and they are happy, and I have decided that is a fair trade.
