The house is loudest when everyone in it is asleep
The fear in my books does not come from the woods, it comes from the ordinary sound you know by heart and cannot explain.
People ask me where the fear in my books comes from and expect me to say the woods, or the old customs, or the thing at the edge of the lamplight. The honest answer is duller and much closer to home. It comes from the ordinary house at the hour when everyone in it is asleep, when the building stops performing for its occupants and starts talking quietly to itself.
A house is never really silent. It ticks as it cools. A pipe knocks once, considers the matter, and knocks again. A floorboard that held its peace all day gives a single soft complaint at two in the morning for no reason you will ever discover. In daylight you do not hear any of it, because daylight is full of your own noise, the kettle and the radio and your feet on the stairs. It is only when you go quiet that the house gets its turn, and what unsettles us is not that the sounds are strange but that they are so familiar and so completely unexplained. You know that noise. You have heard it a thousand times. You have no idea what makes it.
That gap, between knowing a sound and knowing its cause, is the whole of my trade. Horror does not live in the monster. It lives in the half second before you decide the noise was nothing. Everyone has lain in the dark and run the small private court in their head: that was the heating, that was the cat, that was the house settling. The verdict is almost always innocent, and you almost always believe it, and you go back to sleep. I write for the nights when the verdict does not quite take. When you say it was the house settling and some older, stubborn part of you, the part that once kept your ancestors alive, quietly declines to sign off.
I never show the thing in full, and this is not a stylistic tic, it is the actual mechanism of the fear. The mind is a far better set designer than any writer. Give a reader a shape at the edge of the lamplight and refuse to light it, and they will build something out of their own private stock of dread, something fitted exactly to them, far worse than anything I could put into words. The moment you turn the light on, the fear collapses into a coat on a chair, a branch on the glass, a trick of the boiler. Relief is the enemy of dread, and full information is relief.
So I keep the light off, on the page at least. I leave the sound unexplained. I let the house talk to itself and I do not tell you what it is saying. Read it, if you like, with the hall light on. I would. The point was never to make you brave. The point was to remind you that the most ordinary place you know keeps a little of itself back, and only lets you hear it once you have finally stopped making any noise of your own.
